Description

André Maurois was born at Elberg in 1885, and educated at the Lycée de Rouen. His work as liaison officer with the British Army in France in the two world wars gave him in-spiration for The Silence of Colonel Bramble, published as a Penguin in 1940, The Battle of France, and The Thirty Days' War.

It is in the field of biography that M. Maurois has achieved his most notable work. Ariel, a life of Shelley, originally published in 1923, was Penguin Number 1 in 1935. His best-known books include Disraeli (also a Penguin), Byron, The History of England, The History of France, The Quest for Proust, and Lélia (the life of George Sand). He lives in Paris in winter and in the Dordogne in summer.
