Description

This is an introductory book about the American civil rights movement from 1865 to the present. We condensed the more than 120-year struggle for freedom and justice into three parts, and highlighted key people, places, and events that were involved.

Although civil rights are commonly associated with black Americans, other groups have had to overcome social injustices, religious intolerance, racial discrimination, and degrading segregation. Therefore, we included parts of their stories as well-Native Americans, Asians, Hispanics, women, immigrants, handi- capped, and children.

Man's quest for justice didn't begin in the twentieth-century United States. Actually, the story of "rights" had no beginning or end. From ancient times to the present, the struggle for rights has been at the core of countless social and political conflicts. But even though the concepts of rights are constantly being reevaluated, life and freedom are the universally accepted basis for human rights. Human rights are the foundation upon which our entire democracy is based.

Civil rights are the social and political privileges guaranteed to all citizens regardless of race, sex, religion, or national origin. But freedom, justice, and equal- ity are just high-sounding words unless protective laws are impartially enforced. In America the United States Constitution is the legal document designed to provide and protect an individual's rights and also those of groups and organizations.
