Description
Jay (not his real name), a promising 16 year-old final year student hung himself behind the door of his bedroom on a normal Saturday in 2013. The act left his parents and brother devastated. The family eventually left Singapore to heal and to recover from an episode in their lives they would rather not remember.
I met Jay's brother, Nick, who shared the ordeal with me over a cup of tea. I persuaded him to share it with the world so that someone out there could avoid the pain of losing a child to suicide. Many questions as to why Jay took his own life on the fateful day will remain a mystery: "Why did he not confide in someone when he was in a state of desperation?", "Did he not find anymore meaning in living anymore?" or "Was life too painful to want to live it for another moment?"
Perhaps the insights offered by Dr Peter Mack who kindly authored the book, will help parents understand their children better despite the disconnects, and be able to assure them that their love and support can always be counted on.
