Description
The eight Addresses in this book were originally preached in a Lenten Course by His Eminence Cardinal Gracias to large open-air audiences, including many non-Catholics.
Intended to meet an urgent national need of the present day, the Sermons can best be described in His Eminence's own words: "There will be enough to engage your minds and not a little to warm your hearts; there will be doctrine even more than exhortation. Thus to Catholics the Sermons will provide the necessary intellectual equipment to be helpful to their non-Catholic friends and sufficient encouragement to inflame their own hearts; and to non-Catholic friends they will serve to give an idea of what are the bases of genuine morality. But to one and all they will indicate how best we may serve the moral health of the race; ensure the stability, integrity and purity of our civilization. For Mar does not live on bread alone."
Heartened by the grateful appreciations made on the part of many of his hearers, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and by the increased demands written in for copies of the Addresses, His Eminence undertook to edit the entire Course in the present book form. The first edition was quickly sold out, and it is hoped that by this second printing the book will find its way into the hands of many Catholics, who will thus be enabled to intellectually equip themselves and so be helpful to their non-Catholic friends
