In principle, the news of the past few years from Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, despite immense problems there, is still overwhelmingly good. Who cannot be in favor of Democracy? And yet, as I watch these events, I cannot help but feel that we in America may be heading toward an even more trying period: a crisis in ourselves and in our own system. Our release from the Cold War has impelled us out of the long-term certitudes of the East-West struggle and into a new era where those familiar, finite-even comforting-demands of global struggle are no longer valid.
