Description
A beautiful poem is an eternal echo.
Words in a poem when read aloud soon become the echoes not only of the poet's feelings, impulses and thoughts down the ages right up to our times, but they are also the source of strong echoes for the enrichment of our hearts and minds.
These two volumes have been worked out not to supplant but to supplement the English poetry that is so much part of the rich legacy of the English language. The extension of studies from English Literature to Literature in English in the Commonwealth has created a dire need for such an anthology. Nevertheless, we hope you will find this anthology a more realistic approach to our study of the English language and the widening scope of a new growth of Literature in English, which must also include some translated works outside the English- speaking world.
It must be emphasized that this two-volume anthology has been carefully planned to include works of poets from many lands, including those of our own pioneer poets in Singapore and a few from Malaysia who have more or less matured after the War. Notes, wherever possible, are included to assist the students.
This anthology does not make any pretentious claim to cover any definite period or course of literature. It is hoped the students will be sufficiently instilled with a greater love for poetry in particular and literature in general to read more outside this anthology as a follow-up.
This two-volume anthology has taken account of the syllabus content for the young between the ages of twelve and fifteen in our secondary schools.
