Description

This body of doctrine articulates the effort of the Church to address the needs and issues of today's world, a world which may indeed be passing through a vast turning point in history. These documents represent, too, a significant breakthrough in Christian thought. Discarding the exaggerated dualism which over the centuries has hampered the attempt of religion to relate to the secular order, they manifest a new awareness that it is an essential part of the Christian mission to humanize and thereby Christianize political, social, economic, cultural, and technological life. The "Church" and the "world" are not identical, but neither are they in irrevocable opposition. For while the "Church" transcends the "world," it also exists in the world. Existing there, it has a duty to seek to transform the world according to the mind and message of Christ.

It is neither pietistic nor triumphalistic to believe that the Catholic Church is singularly well-equipped to perform this role. We are, as Monsignor Gremillion remarks, moving into the era of a truly "planetary society." To be sure, this society is often rent by tensions and conflicts which seem to threaten its unity. But in certain respects the unity is already an achieved and irreversible fact. Socioeconomic interdependence on a global scale is a reality of overwhelming importance, as the food and energy crises have forcefully reminded us. The reality of inter- dependence can operate for good or ill. And the task of the Catholic Church today is to help make interdependence a positive reality. This the Church can do precisely because, both in theory and in fact, it is a unique transnational society committed to the highest of human and Christian values.
