The Graduated Path to Liberation a guide to developing the mind
This book is an excellent introduction to the basic teachings of Mahayana Buddhism.
Shakyamuni Buddha gave countless teachings, which, however, can be classified broadly into two schools: Hinayana and Mahayana. The latter includes and expands on the teachings of the former. and the fundamental difference between the two is in the motivation that those aspiring to follow the spiritual path are expected to develop. Hinayana practitioners strive for their own liberation from suffering, Mahayana practitioners strive for the enlightenment of all sentient beings.
In this book, Geshe Rabten clearly outlines the entire path to full spiritual awakening, from beginning to end, as taught by Shakyamuni Buddha over 2500 years ago and preserved through experience in Tibet for the last thousand years.
It is suitable for both those with no previous knowledge of Buddhism and those with some experience of practice,
Geshe Rabten was born in Tibet in 1920. He spent twenty years first studying and then teaching at Sera Monastic University in Lhasa, until his exile in 1959. Upon completion of his training in India he was appointed as a religious assistant to the Dalai Lama.
Since 1969, Geshe Rabten has been instructing Western students of Tibetan Buddhism. He founded Tharpa Choeling Centre for Higher Buddhist Studies in Switzerland in 1979, and resides there as full time Spiritual Director.
