Description

THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had been in the habit of playing golf with a friend named Fletcher Robinson, whose legends of Dart- moor, in particular one concerning a huge, spectral hound, never failed to intrigue him. The early spring of 1901 saw him trampling the wastes of Dartmoor and turning over in his mind the plot for a new book to be called The Hound of the Baskervilles. It was serialized in the Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902, the same year that both Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes were offered knighthoods.

The violent and unnatural death of Sir Charles Baskerville, of Baskerville Hall, is attributed by villagers to the curse of the Hound, an ancient ghost which slew his wicked ancestor in 1648 and has since brought doom on his descendants. The report that the legendary hound has actually been seen again brings Watson and Holmes upon the scene just in time to avert another terrible tragedy.
