LIN YUTANG was born in Changchow in the Fukien Province of China in 1895, and led a life which spanned both the spiritual and geographical domains of the globe. Graduating from St John's College, Shanghai, in 1916, he studied at Harvard in America and Jena in Germany during the years that followed, receiving his doctorate from the University of Leipzig in 1923.
Since that time he has served with distinction as a professor at Peking National University and as Chancellor of Nanyang University in Singapore. Dr Lin, however, was never a philosopher in an ivory tower. The world of action as well as thought always played an important part in his life. In 1927 he served as secretary in the Hankow Government's Foreign Ministry and in 1948 as Head of the Arts and Letters Division of UNESCO.
Dr Lin Yutang is best known for his contributions to the world of literature and philosophy. The author of numerous works in Chinese and the editor of various periodicals, he also authored several novels: The Red Peony, Moment in Peking, A Leaf in the Storm, Chinatown Family, Miss Tu, The Vermilion Gate, The Unexpected Island and many general works such as My Country and My People, The Wisdom of China and India, Gay Genius, From Pagan to Christian and The Importance of Living.
