THE ISRAELI AIR FORCE, LIKE ISRAEL ITSELF, HAS BEEN IN existence for only thirty years. In that brief time it has fought four wars, emerging victorious from each. It is today perhaps the most battle-tested air force, and the most ready for combat, of any in the world. Its record in air-to-air combat is unsurpassed: Indeed, though his name is a closely guarded secret, it is an Israeli who is undoubt-edly the world's highest-scoring jet fighter pilot. And certainly its performance against odds is in a class by itself. If ever the catch phrase "a legend in its own time" was deserved, it is merited by Israel's astonishing air arm.
The formal name of this famous organization is the Israel Defence Force/Air Force (IDF/AF). More commonly, it is called by its Hebrew name, Chel Ha'Avir. But its beginnings antedate both names-go back, in fact, to a time before there was even such a thing as the modern state of Israel. Many air forces have had a colorful origin, but none has been stranger or more dramatic than that of the Chel Ha'Avir.
