Description
Traditional baskets are a symbol of a way of life that is slowly diminishing...
One of the most evident handicraft skills in any Kampung (village) is basketry. Nevertheless, these everyday objects are often overlooked, perhaps because of their mundane and utilitarian nature. On close inspection it is clear to see that these beautiful objects have invariably been made with great care and skill. On top of this, we are rewarded with insight into the lives of the older generation.
The lessons that these elders teach us is the importance of connecting to nature. In making the baskets, they show us, not only their considerable knowledge of their natural environment, but their acknowledgement of family and community responsibilities, a shared understanding of their roles in the community, (men collected the plant material while the weaving was done by both men and women). During padi harvesting season or special ceremonies, communities come together and baskets are an essential item in these activities.
