Description
On Saturday, 16 August 1890, twenty eight 'prominent residents' of Kuala Lumpur gathered on a spot where the Royal Lake Club now stands and held the inaugural meeting of the Club. This slim volume looks back over the hundred years which have elapsed since that event and reconstructs the main episodes in the Club's development and history. It commences with the decade of the 'gay nineties', then covers the second decade when Kuala Lumpur was humming with the rubber boom, the decades taken up by two world wars and the years between, the restoration of the Club in 1945, and the recent decades which have witnessed the Club's astonishing resurgence as the country's premier social club. In the process, fascinating glimpses are afforded of Kuala Lumpur's "high society' as it has evolved from colonial times to the present in tandem with Malaysia's developing nationhood.
