With the possible exception of the Poles, life is found on every portion of the earth's surface, and even for some short distance penetrating its crust. There is life, animal or vegetable, miles up the mountain side, and on the ocean bed miles below the surface. There is active life in the burning desert, and latent life, wanting only warmth to activate it, within a block of ice.
