Description

The Neon Bible tells the story of David, a young boy growing up in a small Southern town in the 1940s. David lives in a dilapidated house on a hill. From the porch, he can see the whole valley. He can see the Renning smoke- stack with the tall black R that Poppa said stood for Rich against Poor. He can see lamps winking on and off in cozy houses as people go about their business. And every night he watches the neon Bible light up the sky, right- eous red letters on a golden page with a big blue cross in the middle, emblem of the God-fearing folk who snub his family because Poppa can't afford the church dues.

Once Poppa had spent a whole week's pay on seeds and tools to work the unyielding clay behind the house. Mother cried and begged him to get the money back. They fought. He hit her. Now Poppa was off fighting in the Second World War, and Mother spent all her time admiring the scraggly pines that grew back as though he had never cleared them. "Poppa's pines," she told David. "He planted them, look how they grow."
