Contemporary literature in Nigeria is best represented by the novels of Chinua Achebe, probably the foremost writer from black Africa today. Writing in English, Achebe's novels broadly reflect the evolution of Ibo life from the pre-colonial era to life under military rule in an African nation.
As the first book of critical commentary devoted to the writings of Chinua Achebe, G. D. Killam has extended a great service to Achebe's audience. His lucid exposition and discussion of the four novels, Things Fall Apart, No Longer at Ease, Arrow of God and A Man of the People and selected short stories enhance the reader's appreciation of these major works of modern African literature. In addition to explaining the sociological and anthropological significance of these works, the author focuses his critical attention on these books as works of literature. His analysis encompasses both their African context and background and their thematical universal implications. Utilizing copious and often lengthy extracts as well as Achebe's prose comments, Mr. Killam has produced a thorough and probing critique of
Achebe's works.
G. D. Killam was formerly a Lecturer in English at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria. At present, he is Associate Professor of English at York University, Toronto. G. D. Killam is the author of Africa in English Fiction, 1874-1939.
