Mahathir Mohamad is a controversial figure, but few will dispute his place of prominence in the roll-call of Malaysian Prime Minister thus far. He is arguably the most well-known Malaysian Prime Minister after Tunku Abdul Rahman.

And yet he stands as an enigmatic figure, driven as much by pragmatic politics as by his own vision of a new, industrialised Malaysia, that will survive into the twenty-first century.
