Description
This dictionary is designed for the casual reader. It sets out to give him the common stock of quotations from Shakespeare, the Bible and Paradise Lost, side by side with remarks and stray lines by almost unknown writers who have enriched the language with only a single phrase. Foreign languages are quoted in the original where the quotation is generally remembered in its foreign form, but an English translation is always provided. Modern authors have been drawn on for what the compilers believe to be their memorable sayings, and the ancients have been pruned of many lines that have gone into previous dictionaries of quotations, but which are now almost certainly forgotten. The reader, the writer, the after-dinner speaker, the crossword-puzzle solver and the browser-all will find what they want among the 12,000 or so quotations of this dictionary. ISBN:9780140510164
