Description
The aim of this text is to enable every helper to develop that repertoire of concrete and functional skills needed to make a difference-for the better rather than the worse-in the lives of individual helpers. The term "helper" here is not a reference to credentialed professionals alone. Trained therapist or "hotline" worker, guidance or vocational counselor, rehabilitation practitioner or even teacher: All are united as helpers in a mutual commitment to achieving positive, meaningful, and measurable outcomes on the part of their respective helpers. If you see yourself in any of these groups, either now or in the future, this book is for you. If you are simply an individual who wishes to acquire the skills needed to help others in any situation where such help might be needed, this book is also for you.
As a brief survey of the table of contents will reveal, the text is organized into eight chapters. The first chapter presents a basic model outlining the major phases or stages of helper activity from initial involvement in the helping process through constructive action to reach a goal. Chapters two through seven focus on the specific substations of this helper activity as well as on the specific skills that the helper should use to promote each activity. Chapter eight reviews the entire helping model; presenting each of the phases of helper activity and growth in conjunction with the sequence of helper skills that facilitate the helper's growth.
