Description

The contribution for world peace by Sikhs is indeed a very great one. The total Sikh population is small compared to other races and one is inspired, impressed and fascinated by the achievements made by Sikh soldiers world over. Since their time of recruitment by the British after the fall of Punjab in 1849, Sikh soldiers in British deployments have displayed unparalleled bravery, loyalty and sacrifice. There is no denying that there is hardly a village in the Punjab, which did not lose a son in battle in far away countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Africa, Britain, France, Germany, Russia, Singapore and Malaysia. One only needs to glance at the names of the fallen at the Kranji War Memorial in Singapore to appreciate how many Sikhs left the safety and comforts of their homes in Punjab, and died in British uniforms to defend distant places.

THE BOOK

The first section deals with the background to the martial spirit in the Sikh soldiers and the role played by the Sikh Gurus, Sikh history and Sikh religion. The second part puts on record the Japanese attack of Malaya (Singapore and Malaysia) and gives a list of names of Sikh soldiers who fell during the War (1939-45).

Part One

Some inspirational hymns are taken from the Sikh Holy Book and included in this section. The purpose of the articles and religious hymns in this section is to trace down the events in history that lead to the unparalleled bravery, courage and loyalty of the Sikh soldiers. This will be an inspiration to our local boys doing National Service or are regulars in our forces. An important article, ``The Contributions of the Sikhs to the Development of Singapore since 1873" is included.

Part Two

"This section gives an account of the Japanese attack and lists down the names of the Sikh soldiers with available information about them. Their names are mentioned on the Honours Roll at Kranji. Some statistics and the instrument of Japanese surrender is included.

The Book is published by the Sikh Missionary Society Malaya, which is a charitable organization listed under the Charities Act and is supported by the National Heritage Board, Singapore.
