Description
Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of the founder of Tiffany & Co., the New York Jewellery store, was the leading American exponent of Art Nouveau and a major figure in the history of glass- making. During his long life he was a painter, interior decorator, maker of stained-glass windows and mosaic paintings as well as the designer of the famed 'Favrile' glass bowls, vases and glasses and the leaded and blown glass lamps.
With its brilliant colours, strange shapes and innovative techniques, Tiffany's work is startlingly original and has been both loved and reviled; an immense popular and artistic success at the turn of the century but completely out of favour and consigned to rubbish tips and jumble sales during the 1930's and 1940's.
During the 1950's the Tiffany revival began; interest has since snowballed and prices continue to rise astronomically.
Norman Potter, Curator of the Haworth Art Gallery which houses the finest collection of Tiffany glass in Europe, and writer and journalist, Douglas Jackson, have collaborated to tell the whole fascinating story.
Lavishly illustrated in colour and black and white, Tiffany also contains a useful reference section listing the most important collections of his work, and information on the hall marks.
