As no medical knowledge on the reader's part is presumed in this book, I have selected for discussion, from the vast number of psychiatric topics available, those which, as well as being of general interest, lend themselves readily to exposition in everyday language.
Though most of these topics are closely related to one another, the chapters which deal with them cannot be combined into any central theme or connected argument. Each, perforce, stands alone and must bear its own load of any necessary explanations beyond the preliminary information given in the earlier part of the book. Any attempt to develop a progressive line of thought would turn this into a medical text-book and defeat its whole object.
This lack of continuity has occasionally made a little repetition inevitable, but in my attempts to expound difficult psychological matters in clear and simple terms I have tried to avoid wearisome technicalities on the one hand and mere superficiality on the other.
The purpose of the book is explained in the opening chapter, and here I would only add my hope that it may succeed in modifying to some extent the attitude of the public towards the great and wonderful specialty of psychological medicine.
