Description
Our first edition, "To Heal the Sick: The Story of Healthcare and Doctors in Penang, 1786-200-4" was well received, with warm reviews appearing in the New Sunday Times of 22 August 2004 and in the Sunday Star of 31 October 2004.
It has been fully sold out, and when Dato Dr PC Vanniasingham mentioned the need for 100 copies as a souvenir for delegates of the upcoming Singapore Alumni reunion, we decided to update the book
This new edition includes an article on traditional healing methods before the arrival of western medicine so important then, and even now, in the lives of many in the Penang community. We also have the story of how Pantai Hospital came to Penang, especially relevant now that the Pantai-Gleneagles group is the largest private healthcare provider in both Malaysia and Singapore.
There is also the story of how hospice services developed, an overview of the challenges facing doctors today as well as updates of the story of surgery and of the concluding chapter.
With over 25 medical schools in the country, there is no doubt that the doctors and healthcare environment of the 21" century in Penang will be very different from that of the 19 and 20 centuries.
But the fact will always remain that doctors exist to heal the sick. By retelling the stories from simpler times, we hope to remind both doctors and the public that ours is a sacred profession.
The correct interaction between doctor and patient should leave the patient feeling comforted and the doctor satisfied at having helped a person in need-truly a win-win outcome for both patient and doctor.
