Description
TOGAF (The Open Group Architecture Framework) has come a long way since its inception in 1994, at the instigation of The Open Group's membership.
The original development of TOGAF was based on the Technical Architecture Framework for Information Management (TAFIM), developed by the US Department of Defense. The DoD gave encouragement to create TOGAF from the basis of TAFIM, which itself represented hundreds of person-years of development effort and millions of dollars of investment.
Starting from this proven foundation, the members of The Open Group Architecture Forum have developed successive versions of TOGAF over the years and published them on The Open Group public web site (www.opengroup.org/architecture). TOGAF Version 9 provides a wide-ranging set of revisions to improve the value of the TOGAF framework: It is an evolution from TOGAF 8.1.1, thereby preserving existing investment in TOGAF, and adds further detail and clarification to what is already proven.
Of the many thousands who download TOGAF there are three broad categories of reader:
Those who are merely curious and interested to read about TOGAF and Architecture Framework
Those who wish to evaluate TOGAF and possibly go on to use it within their own organization
Those who wish to use TOGAF for commercial gain (for example, on projects for third parties, or in producing training materials, etc.)
This book is primarily intended to address the needs of the first two of these categories. For those seeking to use TOGAF for internal architecture work, The Open Group makes it available under a free, perpetual license.
All are encouraged to use TOGAF for their various purposes, including those seeking to use it commercially (though different terms apply for commercial use).
