On one of its visits Kajang Women's Prison in January 2001, SUHANAM observed a large number of foreign nationals,mainly young girls, in remand in the prison. During the conversations with some of the girls,  SUHAKAM found that many of these girls were tricked and trafficked into the country.They had been lured and coerced with promises of job as home help in supermarket restaurants with lucrative incomes, but inevitably ended up in the pernicious flesh trade often against their willA sub-committee was then formed to look in this issue of grave importance. Trafficking in women and children is the worst form of violation of the human rights of women and children. It is one of the greatest human rights challenges of our time. Aside from being across violation of human rights backing threatens the world community by towing a safe haven trafficked syndicates, funding it activities and facilitating the spread of sexually transmitted disease including HIV/AIDS
A Forum on Trafficking of Women and Children - A Cross Border and Regional Perspective was held on 13 and 14 April 2004 at the Prince Hotel The Forum was officiated by SUHAKAM Chairman, Tan Sin Abu Talib bin Othman The Forum was the culmination of SUHAKAM'S dialogues with various groups which SUHAKAM has had throughout the year 2000 and in early 2004.
