Perhaps it is because of our human pride, but it seems that Christians of every age- at least, if they are enthusiasts - feel constrained to believe that they are living in the worst of times: the end of the world is at hand. Or else they claim that they are living in a new day and that God is doing a brand new thing. Ronald Knox in Enthusiasm (which he regarded as his most important book) shows how, down through history, from St Paul's day to ours, members of enthusiastic movements who believe they are guided by the Spirit have always claimed that the end of the world was at hand. Even great saints, such as St Vincent Ferrer, the greatest preacher in the Dominican Order, preached that their times were so momentous, so disastrous, that the end of the world was imminent.
