Description

Bernard J Shapero Rare Books is proud to present an exhibition of rare and early panoramic photographs.

This collection shows some of the carliest photographic city views, such as Rio de Janeiro, Singapore and Shangluu items 14, 74 and 52 respectively and shipping scenes from around the world such as Brazil, Canton and Naples (ems 83, 50 and 4 The collection ranges in date from the early 1950s with the view of Rangoon by Linneaus Tripe (item 46) to the 1920s and 30s in the one- plate panoramas taken of Canton by the Afong studio (item 50-511)

It is extremely unusual to see so many photographs of this format gathered in one place. The awkward dimensions and manor in which these panoramas had to be transported and stored meant that many were damaged or lost some of their plate.

Many of the images were produced in small numbers and were taken with a specific audience and purpose in mind, commissioned to illustrate urban topography, archacological sites, military subjects and promote western interests abroad

The term 'panorama' was originally patented by Henry Aston Barker to describe his monumental three hundred and sixty degree paintings in the building of the same name on Leicester Square.

These large-scale vistas caught the public's imagination at a time when Britain, and Europe's, attention was being increasingly drawn overseas with expanding commercial and military interests in the Empire.
