Description
Welcome to the third edition of "The World Book". Founded in 2008 at the Alice Smith School in Malaysia, the World Book is a collection of poems, short stories and essays from students around the globe.
An evolving and ambitious project, the mission of the World Book provide students with the opportunity to share their passion for writing. The cultural diversity of the participants and their colourful interpretations of the selected themes is what make this book such an exciting read.
The first publication included entries from eight Asian schools. From that humble beginning it has grown tremendously, with interest from an increasing number of schools around the region. The 2009 edition hosted student work from twenty eight schools from five continents - Asia, Africa, America, Europe and Australia.
The quality of the submissions that are received makes the final selection for publication a difficult task. The final selection process seeks to include a balance between the range of submitted responses and themes, a fair representation of the schools participating and the range of age and gender of student work. From a poem about "Crickets" to a letter to Hamlet, the content and variety is very interesting and we trust, appealing to readers of all ages.
In this respect, the work of Rick Riddell and Devina Muttiah, teachers at the Alice Smith School, in leading and producing the final publication of this book needs to be acknowledged. Their desire to share the creativity, talent, thoughts and ideas of our young people through this world book project is most commendable and greatly appreciated.
We hope that you enjoy reading the final selection of pieces in this edition. We would like to thank all the students who submitted work for their interest and enthusiasm in being a part of the project.
