Description
When war was declared in 1914, military experts believed a resolution to the conflict would be quick and decisive. Little did they know that this declaration would mark the beginning of four years of unrelenting attritional conflict, bringing the deaths of as many as 17 million people from around the world, and laying the foundations for a second world war some twenty years later.
As men and women were called up to help with the war effort, couples were torn apart. their love tested by distance and the sheer horrors of fighting on the Front; others found love, as the war broke down previously impassable boundaries of distance or class.
The stories of 14 such couples are told in moving detail in World War I Love Stories, offering a profound insight into the lives and loves that would forever be shaped by "a war to end all wars."
The love stories include:
โข British soldier Robert Digby, who, when trapped behind enemy lines in occupied France and in desperate need of help, knocked on the door of Claire Dessenne's grandmother.
โข American Ernest Hemingway, who, while recovering from an injury in a war hospital in Milan, fell deeply in love with his nurse, Agnes von Kurowsky.
โข Fred and Evelyn Albright, who were inseparable in their homeland before he crossed the Atlantic to join the fighting.
