Description
My first brush with the so-called paranormal was an in- vestigation of claims of 'past lives', or reincarnations re- trieved via hypnosis, the book I wrote on this subject being Mind Out of Time?, published in 1981. It would be best described as a de-bunk, for convincing as many cases appeared at first sight, when subjected to serious scrutiny they simply fell apart as anything genuinely transmitted from beyond the grave.Such a disappointing conclusion might well have been my last word on the subject but for an unexpected invitation, in the midst of researches on the historical back- ground of the Biblical Exodus, to write at very short notice the book accompaniment for a forthcoming dramatised television series on the paranormal, Worlds Beyond. The stories for dramatisation were to be taken from actual cases in the archives of the Society for Psychical Research, and the viewing of a pilot episode from the series was sufficient to convince me that the producer, Alan Radnor, had found a rich new source of television entertainment. But the dramatisations were based, often very loosely, on what was supposed to have happened. The question to which they gave rise was: what really happened? So was born the idea for this book.
